As with all foundation issues, before a solution can be suggested a cause must be determined. The possible causes of a bowed wall are:
Why Basement Walls Bow and Crack?
 |
- Hydrostatic (water) pressure outside the wall
- Earth pressure outside the wall.
- Tree roots outside the wall.
- Some other construction such as a porch, outside the wall, the footings of which do not extend to the same depth as the main foundation.
- Heavy equipment operated too near the wall during construction, or after.
- Backfill of the foundation with unsuitable materials such as large rocks.

As you can see there are many factors that can cause cracked and bowing foundation walls. The most common cause is Hydrostatic Water Pressure resulting from wet soil surrounding the outside of the wall. When soil gets wet, it will expand and put pressure on the wall. This can result in the wall cracking or breaking and will reduce the structural integrity of the wall. Over time, this can produce lateral bending and the foundation or basement wall will become bowed. First signs of this condition are significant cracking and, if left unattended, this condition will worsen with time jeopardizing your safety, structural integrity of the home, and resale value of the property. StayDry® has trusted and proven methods to stop this from happening to your home.
